30. PAKRANTE – A CENTRE FOR CREATIVE INDUSTRIES

Authors

ARCHITECTS – „Ambraso architektų biuras”, STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS – „Constr”, 2013.

About

Pakrante Centre for Creative Industries is situated on the corner of Vaidilutes Street in the site of a former supermarket and a trolleybus ring. From long ago, this was a place where steamboats would run from the city centre to the micro-resort and where the river was bustling with life.

A recreational environment and the mysteriousness of artistic endeavours were main inspirations for the studio of A. Ambrasas prior to designing this building. A timber facade allows the building to merge with its surroundings; while a single window in an otherwise totally blank main facade attracts visitors, inviting them to discover the creative world as if secretly looking through a keyhole.

The open public spaces on the ground floor invite us into an open plan exhibition space and reading room. If we go down the serpentine ramp toward the basement, we will find artists working on various projects while their cosy residences, clad in white timber and smelling like pine, are situated on the upper floor. The Valakampiai meadow is easily accessible from the 1st floor corridor by an open staircase.

This sustainable and modest Pakrante Art Incubator has become a vivid and rare example of adapting a cultural and ecological approach to Lithuanian architecture. We invite you to discover an exceptional building that respects the surroundings of the meandering Neris and Verkiai Regional Park.
