27. Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre

Authors

ARCHITECT - E. N. Bučiūtė, 1974.

About

Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre is a silhouette of a phantom emerging above the river. This modern building is symbolic to the shore of Neris. Black and white rectangles on the façade along with the “crown of a grass-snake” above the roof and the broken cascading steps represent the main characteristics of late modernism.

Two eclectic ideas – tradition and modernism – intertwine in the architecture of the theatre. The warm yellow glass façade, which is wrapped by the minimalist body of the building, leaves a contemporary and open impression. After the first effect, the viewer arrives at an extraordinarily high foyer, which expressively prompts the new age of society progress. The atmosphere of innovation is strengthened by the famous chandeliers, as well as by the stage construction and lighting systems in the performance hall. Traditional Lithuanian materials are part of the interior, and function as a contrast with the ascetic exterior of the theatre. These traditional materials include red clay bricks, brass pieces and unique wood finish. These and many other architectural and interior choices are absolute eye catchers. We invite you to the debut tour of Open House Vilnius to see and hear all about the world behind the red stage curtain.
