About

In 1974, Vilnius was rapidly expanding. The residential area of Lazdynai was growing, and the new district of Karoliniškės was already being built. The first television station in Vilnius on Konarskio Street was getting old, so urban architects were faced with a daunting task. They had to come up with a way and a place to build a TV tower and station that would provide better television broadcasts for the residents of Vilnius and its surroundings areas.

It would have been much easier and cheaper to build a metal tower like the one on Konarskio Street, but the city needed a new accent, a symbol – a building that would not ruin the city’s landscape and architecture. There were major demands regarding the shape of the tower, since it was supposed to become the dominant building in the new residential areas of the city.

It is safe to say that the project was a successful one – today, the Vilnius TV Tower is considered a symbol of the city and is extremely popular among visitors and locals alike due to the revolving observation deck/restaurant situated on the 19th floor which provides a unique opportunity to see the entire Vilnius panorama.
