31. PALACE OF THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA

Authors

ARCHITECT – V. E. Čekanauskas, STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS – J. Marozienė, Č. Gerliakas, 1982.

About

The palace is a great example of late modernist architecture with some manifestations of postmodern style. The modest complex of four blocks with an inner rectangular courtyard easily blends into the environment.

This building is one of the most important and most interesting pieces created by the famous Lithuanian architect Vytautas Čekanauskas, which was intended to be merged into the existing surroundings

It is still a mystery how the architect managed to convince the government at that time to build such a modest building, because the Central Committee of the Soviet Union had to be dominant –in order to highlight their political significance. However, the architect managed to defend the frugal project in Moscow by telling them that it was designed to be as modest as the great Lenin was.

Created more than 30 years ago, the interiors of the building are authentic and reflect previous times, while also including unique works of art. Do not miss the chance to see a secret cinema hall, and other places where the most important politicians meet.
