In the very heart of Vilnius Old Town, a building originally constructed during the Soviet era as the Vilnius Exhibition Hall is now home to the Contemporary Art Centre (CAC). Designed in a modernist style specifically for art exhibitions, the building not only showcases the latest works by Lithuanian and international artists but is itself a witness to the evolution of experimental art movements.
When the exhibition hall first appeared along Vokiečių Street, it sparked debate due to its bold form and expression in the sensitive context of the Old Town. From the beginning, this experimental building challenged established architectural norms—symbolically becoming a home for those who continued the spirit of experimentation through various artistic forms.
Artists who have worked here, the presence of Fluxus manifestos, architect Vytautas Ozarinskas’ experiments, and the ideas of many other creatives have become an inseparable part of the CAC’s identity.
After a three-year renovation, the Contemporary Art Centre reopened in the summer of 2024, unveiling its renewed spaces. The redesign was carried out by the architectural duo Marina and Audrius Bučas, who sensitively combined new interior forms with the legacy of historical layers. During guided tours, visitors are invited to explore these changes and discover a fresh perspective on one of Lithuania’s most important spaces for contemporary art.
