First opened in 1903, this hospital is the oldest and largest psychiatric care institution in Lithuania. The complex was designed as an ensemble of separate buildings set within an extensive green landscape. It is characterized by a symmetrical layout and a clear spatial composition, which creates a distinctive silhouette when viewed from above.

Over time, both the site and its buildings have undergone functional changes and have not been used solely for medical purposes. At different periods, military units were also stationed here. These layers of use have contributed to the complex’s multifaceted identity.

Treatment models have also evolved – from long-term institutional care to contemporary practices focused on shorter hospital stays, community-based treatment, and greater patient autonomy. Today, some buildings are used differently from their original purpose, while others still await transformation or adaptive reuse.

In 2019, the complex was added to the Register of Cultural Properties, formally recognizing its architectural, historical, and urban significance.

Today, the hospital is increasingly opening its doors to visitors, aiming to reduce social stigma while promoting awareness of cultural heritage.
