The Vilnius Funeral Palace “Ritualas” has, for more than two centuries, been associated with remembrance and farewell rituals for the city’s diverse communities.
The complex consists of two buildings constructed in 1975 and 1987. In both, there is a clear intention to express architectural form and light through symbolic means.
This is a building of a unique function, located away from Vilnius Old Town – on a hilly, forested site within the territory of the former old Jewish cemetery. The earlier structure is distinguished by its sharp, expressive geometric forms and is the first building in the Soviet Union designed specifically for secular funeral services. Its main façade is defined by two tall, truncated triangular volumes oriented toward the centre, along with a triangular entrance element.
In the later building, in contrast to the first, the compositional emphasis shifts to the interior. A mysterious atmosphere is created through postmodern spaces with subdued lighting. Externally, a dark, recessed entrance is highlighted, while the overall composition is dominated by a horizontal, light-toned volume.
The main funeral hall is adorned with a five-part sgrafitto-fresco Milky Way by artist Nijolė Vilutytė, rising upward in a fragmented, fan-like composition. This space has hosted the farewells of many prominent figures in Lithuanian politics, culture, and the arts.
