REIMAGINED APARTMENT IN PIROMONTAS, KALVARIJŲ STREET

In the historic part of the Šnipiškės district – Piromontas – stands a residential building constructed in 1898. This area is protected by the state as an urban and architectural heritage site.

Viktorija Puodžiūtė-Jurkšaitė and Andrius Jurkšaitis acquired one of the apartments in this building, though it was not love at first sight. Only later, captivated by the wall paintings and ornamental ceiling mouldings, did they begin to see its future potential and decide to preserve everything authentic and valuable.

During the renovation, wall frescoes were uncovered – once the old wallpaper was removed, a bluish polychrome layer emerged. One of the most striking discoveries was a doorway that had been bricked up during the Soviet period, revealing the apartment’s earlier layout.

In the renewed interior, the original parquet flooring was reused as wall cladding in the wardrobe, while a tiled stove with a built-in bread oven in the kitchen became a distinctive focal point. The apartment is filled with objects given a second life – the owners’ appreciation for antiques has shaped a unique and authentic atmosphere.

Here, one can experience an authentic environment, uncover what has long been hidden, and sense the subtle dialogue between the past and contemporary design solutions.
