Saulėtekis Student Campus is a district focused on science, studies, and business, located in the northern part of Antakalnis. It is currently considered one of the largest study and science centers in the Baltic countries.
The need to build university campuses in Europe arose in the 1960s, when universities were expanding. At that time, the concept of Saulėtekis Student Campus began to develop, and in 1963, an open competition was announced. The project was awarded to the second-place winners: Rimantas Dičius, Julius Jurgelionis, and Zigmas Jonas Daunora. In 1966, a detailed territorial plan was prepared, and two years later, the construction of Saulėtekis Campus began.
According to the prepared concept of the campus, the territory was divided into three zones: an educational zone, a cultural and sports area with a cafeteria and sports center, and a residential zone with the “Kamchatka” and “New York” dormitories. The campus plan has a dynamic structure, with free planning and the possibility of expanding all parts. The parts of the complex are freely located in the territory, and the buildings are harmoniously integrated into the forest clearings.
The initial concept of the campus, which has been partially realized, continues to be developed in the 21st century. New objects successfully continue to shape the territory according to the encoded vision.
