The Writers’ Union building has been designed, redesigned, and renovated by as many as six architects. Over time, it has been home to merchants, counts, and dukes; it has hosted gatherings of the intelligentsia and bohemian circles; and today, it serves as a place where writers seek inspiration.

That inspiration can also be found in the building’s authentic interior –one of the most beautiful and impressive surviving examples of Neo-Baroque interiors in Lithuania. It reflects the 19th century: not entirely distant, yet not quite recent, and marked by a rich and colourful history. Repeatedly restored and repaired –at times even saved from critical condition – the building now continues to serve the literary community.

Exquisite stove ornamentation, ceiling reliefs, wrought iron details, tapestries, and richly varied wood panelling and carvings create a striking interior that leaves a lasting impression. According to Nijolė Lukšionytė-Tolvaišienė, the custom-made wrought metal light fixtures and the staircase railings in the vestibule – unique in Vilnius – were commissioned by the owner herself, making them particularly distinctive features. One of the most impressive highlights of the building, and its true calling card, is the celebrated staircase in the ground-floor hall.
