Kablys is best known for its distinctive architectural feature – a hook embedded in its façade. However, this unique accent was not part of the original design.

During the Soviet period, Palaces of Culture for railway workers were a standard feature in nearly every major city, and Vilnius was no exception. The current building was constructed in 1958 based on a typical Socialist Classicist design.

The palace hosted dances and film screenings and included a café and a cinema. It is said that some of the liveliest dance evenings in Vilnius took place here, rivalled only by those at the Trade Union Palace on Tauras Hill. For many years, events held here shaped the cultural identity of the city, and the building gradually became an important centre for creative expression.

In 1994, the sculpture Hook by Mindaugas Navakas was installed in the centre of the pediment, replacing the former emblem of the Soviet Union. Although intended as a temporary installation, it became so integral to the building that it remains in place to this day, giving it a new symbolic meaning – this is how the building came to be known as Kablys.

Today, it is one of the most important and largest centres of alternative culture in Vilnius, still retaining its cultural function. Parties continue here until dawn, just as originally intended.
