Gedimino pr. 27

Office Building at Gedimino Avenue 27

A heavy sandstone facade, expressive entrances, and subtle ornamentation. Designed by bold and innovative young Polish architects, this building on the main street of Vilnius showcases the modern urban culture of the interwar period.

In modern architecture, exterior facades are devoid of decor, moldings, ornate forms, traditional ornamentation, balustrades, canopies, and pediments. The aesthetics of materials are highlighted. Although the aesthetics of undecorated concrete dominated in later periods, at that time it was still covered with natural materials, using polished sandstone and split stone.

This project, which abandoned the decorativeness characteristic of Gedimino Avenue, embodies the most important idea of the modernist architecture leader Le Corbusier, that the form of a building follows the function hidden within.

The building at Gediminas Avenue 27 is considered one of the most valuable, if not the most valuable, masterpiece of interwar modern architecture in Vilnius. It is a kind of time capsule, despite the fact that some of its elements, such as the revolving doors, bent window frames, and certain interior details, have already been destroyed.

A lot of authentic material, planning solutions, and even the function (polyclinic, pharmacy) still remain here.
