Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania

The Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania is a monumental example of Socialist Realist architecture that in half a century became a true symbol of science and knowledge.

The original project for the library reflected the ornate style of Socialist Realism, but due to prolonged construction, the facade decor was simplified, and the transition towards modernism is noticeable in the interior.

After nearly a decade of construction, the building opened its doors in 1963 as the largest library in Lithuania at that time. The urban planning was no less important in shaping the image of one of the most important squares in the capital.

The decision to reconstruct the building resulted in a process that lasted almost as long as the entire construction period, and the renovated library opened its doors in 2016.

The newly renovated building shines with its versatility: behind the authentic exterior lie the most complex engineering solutions, and in the contrasting interior, heritage details intertwine with modern technologies. The library has become more open than ever: hundreds of visitors come to the reading rooms, art and exhibition spaces, the traditional image of a library is changed by the abundance of new functions and events.

Born again, this historically and architecturally significant and unique object combines narratives from two eras, while maintaining the reputation of an advanced library.
