Located at the junction of Karoliniškės and Viršuliškės in the early 1980s, the Press House is an exceptional example of industrial architecture and one of the largest projects of that time.
Construction took place in stages: first, a 20-story building for newspapers, magazines, and publishing houses; later, a production building, warehouses, garages, a 200-seat cafeteria, and a 500-seat conference hall.
All state daily newspapers and magazine editorial offices moved to the new Press House from various locations in the city. The largest printing press in Lithuania was located in the production building. The first newspapers began to be printed in 1984, even before construction was completed.
On January 11, 1991, at 12 noon, the Soviet army forcibly seized the Press House. Several people were injured during the attack, one of them seriously. Traces of that day’s events – marks from Soviet soldiers’ bullets – can still be seen on the wall of the building above the main entrance. In 2022, the Cultural Heritage Assessment Council decided that the facade of the Press House and the bullet marks are historically valuable and must be preserved.
This is an impressive project, bearing the name of the most modern building for a printing press in Lithuania at that time. The Press House remains a beacon of press and radio, disseminating the latest information.
