Vilnius Railway Station and Locomotive Repair Workshop Buildings

The railway station dates back more than 160 years: the first station in Vilnius was designed by the French architect Pirelli and built in 1861; During the reconstruction of Vilnius train station in 1950, a “city gate” was created: the newly built station was to symbolize the new socialist Vilnius; The 1950s design of the station is characterized by the interior of rather luxurious materials (artificial marble columns, plaster moldings, wall paintings, chandeliers), created by the artist Jurijus Poliuškinas; The turntable at the train repair depot is a special wheel-shaped device designed to guide the locomotive to the required path; In 2018, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the restored state, Lithuanian Railways presented Lithuania with an original gift — for the first time in history, the National Anthem sounded like the sounds of trains.
