THE MEMORIAL COMPLEX OF THE TUSKULĖNAI PEACE PARK – THE COLUMBARIUM

ARCHITEKTAI – M. Šaliamoras, V. E. Čekanauskas, A. Umbrasas, 2004 m.

The hill sprouted in the Tuskulėnai Peace Park is a modern echo of the Baltic burial mounds in the city, it commemorates the tragic 20th century of the Lithuanian history and hides a unique space — a chapel-columbarium; Tuskulėnai Manor ensemble is a place of dramatic fate: 19th century’s former center of Vilnius cultural life disappeared from the map in 1944 due to a grim secret — the victims of the Soviet terror buried here in secret; Columbarium is of an exceptional architecture and the only building of this functional type in Lithuania: both a memorial and a kind of tomb; A unique place to be with another 724 people at once, even if you come alone. In the chapel, you will feel the sacredness of this extraordinary space and will see the impressive vaulted mosaic of Gitenis Umbrasas, made of white and yellow gold, which, according to the author, symbolizes freedom, destiny and happiness.
