Rupert – A Center for Creative Industries
About
In the stunning landscape of Vilnius, on the second Valakampiai beach, where steamships used to shuttle from the city center and a small resort life buzzed, a creative industries center called “Rupert” has found its home, replacing a former store and trolleybus loop.
The seaside ambiance and the mystique of artistic creation served as the primary inspirations for the building’s design. The wooden facade visually blends the building into the pine forest, and a solitary window on the blank main facade entices visitors to peek into the world of artists as if through a keyhole.
On the first floor, thoughtfully designed and functional public spaces invite visitors to explore a versatile exhibition hall and a reading room. A serpentine ramp leads down to the basement, where artists are found at work. From there, visitors can ascend to the attic level, a space filled with bright, cozy residences that exude the fragrance of pine wood. Interestingly, the second-floor corridor offers quick access to the Valakampiai dunes.
The environmentally friendly and modest “Rupert” arts incubator is an example of mature Lithuanian green architecture. Here, there is a palpable regard for the magnificent natural surroundings of the winding Neris River, creating a synthesis of nature and architecture.
