The Observatory of Ideas of Vilnius University on M. K. Čiurlionio Street, like any other observatory in the world, is a unique object, whose architectural solutions were influenced by the natural environment and the astronomical instruments of the time. Built in 1933, the Observatory is classified as belonging to the historicist period, yet its architecture also shows classical features.

The construction of this facility is a successful attempt to keep pace with scientific progress in a difficult political and economic climate. The one building of the Observatory’s rooftop was equipped with an Earth observation station from which the first artificial Earth satellites were observed. Astronomers here also developed the Vilnius Photometric System, one of the methods used to determine stellar parameters.

After its reconstruction, the Observatory’s facilities are being reborn: the Astronomers’ and Meteorologists’ House hosts scientists from Vilnius University’s Faculty of Philosophy, while the Observatory’s pavilion and towers are being prepared for educational and museum activities. The wooden domes are still in place, covered with copper sheeting with swivelling and opening mechanisms, and the main parts of the telescope from the inter-war period are still there.

The Observatory of Ideas, which reflects the distinctive architecture of Vilnius University, continues to fascinate the city’s inhabitants, with its towers offering a panoramic view of Vilnius and the nearby Vingis Park.
