The New Building of the Vilnius Academy of Arts

About

Perched on a slope, the new building of the Vilnius Academy of Arts greets visitors with the murmur of the Vilnelė River. Once inside, the building speaks with symbols, colors, and unusual lighting. This building was a formidable challenge to its architects, given the complex topography of the site and the attitudes of the authorities at the time.

Constructed in the early 1990s, the building seamlessly blends into its surroundings and captivates with its unexpected postmodernist solutions and high-tech elements. A bridge which leads to the main entrance is one of the connections, forming the compositional axis of the building and linking the natural environment with the architecture.

Vytautas Brėdikis, the principal architect of the building, extremely attentive and precise, therefore, the building is replete with detail and innovative technical solutions: from heating systems resembling sculptures to continuous flowing handrails, lighting, and color choices. The building also houses not only the academy’s studios and workshops but also a billiards room and even a sauna.

These buildings stand out for their architectural expression, characterized by unexpected modernist solutions and contextual relevance, where every detail has its own meaning.
