In 2016, the Center for Physical Sciences and Technology (FTMC) opened its doors on Saulėtekio Alley, adjacent to Vilnius University and Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, and their student campuses. It is one of the largest scientific centers in the Baltic States.
The building’s expression was greatly influenced by scientific logic, which also determined the architectural solutions. The concept of project is a building that symbolizes the modernity and innovation of science, the harmony of the micro and macro worlds. The idea for the facade was dictated by the crystalline lattice of graphene – one of the most modern materials of the 21st century – resembling the hexagonal structure of a honeycomb.
FTMC has brought together the best scientists in the country, and modern laboratory equipment has been installed. As a result, most of the scientific research conducted here is unique not only in Lithuania but also worldwide, and the technologies created and scientific results achieved are known internationally.
This science center houses 250 laboratories of various purposes, 24 of which are open access laboratories. Up to 700 researchers and students can conduct experiments simultaneously. The transparency of spaces has been created where the installation of glass walls encourages scientists in the spaces to communicate, to be visible, rather than to close themselves in private, closed laboratories.
