Ministry of Economy and Innovation of the Republic of Lithuania | Former State Planning Commission Building

The building, located in the corner of Lukiškės Square, attracts attention with its height and architectural expression, a recessed first floor, and a facade decorated with repeating details.

This building is one of the first high-rise buildings in Vilnius, built on a cramped plot of four and five-story buildings. The post-war international modernist style object that appeared in the old part of the city stands out clearly from the urban environment.

The volume of the building consists of a high rectangular part and expanded lower floors decorated with black polished stone. Two of the eleven floors of the building are deepen into the ground. The exterior wall finish is quite simple, but very high-quality materials were used. In the multi-story part of the building, bands of windows with aluminum frames alternate with bands of slightly profiled panels covered with gray marble grains. Both in the plan structure and in the composition of the exterior walls, the priority of function and the search for original structural solutions can be felt.

The project architect, Elena Nijolė Bučiūtė, is one of the most prominent female architects of her generation. Through her architectural solutions, she sought to create a building of the highest quality, reflecting the prevailing ideas of modernism of the time.
