The Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre is a phantom silhouette emerging above the river. This modern Opera and Ballet Theatre building is a symbol inseparable from the banks of the Neris River. Its black and white rectangular facade with a “serpent crown” rising above the roof and broken cascades of stairs represents the main principles of late modernism.
The architecture of the theatre building intertwines two eclectic ideological currents – tradition and modernism. The impression of modernism and openness is created by the warm yellow glass façade, which is enveloped by the minimalist volume of the building.
Engaging in a dialogue, the viewer enters a foyer space of impressive height, expressively hinting at a new era of social progress. The atmosphere of innovation is enhanced by the famous yellow glass chandeliers, and upon entering the auditorium, by the stage construction and lighting system.
As if in contrast to the ascetic exterior of the building, the interior is dominated by traditional Lithuanian materials: specially made red clay bricks, brasswork, and unique wood finishes.
Over time, the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre has become an integral part of the Old Town in the eyes of Vilnius residents and a distinctive landmark of the city, with exceptional significance to this day.
