This unassuming, traditional house-shaped volume with a sloping roof is attached to the Department of Fine Arts building of the National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Art. Set back from the building line on Antakalnio Street and blending harmoniously into the urban context, the new building becomes almost invisible.
The old gymnasium remains in the foreground, prioritizing the long history of the building, while the new volume recedes into the background and harmoniously forms the whole of the territory. It is connected to the new building by a distinctive hanging architectural element – a covered bridge-gallery. The decision to raise the extension on a glazed plinth emphasizes the modernity of the architecture and modernity through the use of complex structural solutions.
On the first floor, an exhibition hall, a teachers’ room, and other common rooms are designed, while on the other floors, classrooms are located on the western side, which can be accessed from the halls. The totality of the building’s architectural solutions creates a whole of high-quality architecture, meets the needs of the building’s “inhabitants”, so that it is comfortable to be and work here.
The modern architectural building still impresses with its architectural harmony and a high-quality sense of the surrounding environment in which it is integrated.
