Apartment Building on A. Jakšto Street

During the interwar period, various government agencies and companies constructed modernist apartment buildings to accommodate executives and specialists transferred from Warsaw. A prime example of a beautiful and modern company-owned building with garages is the State Insurance Company building at A. Jakšto Street 2, built together with the institution itself.

Often overlooked, this small apartment building, set back from the street and behind an original fence, was designed by young Polish architects. The building is striking for its modesty and minimalism in the context of Gedimino Avenue, with its strict geometric forms reflecting the core ideas of Modernism.

The building had a luxurious and spacious manager’s apartment on the entire second floor, and smaller apartments for employees were located on the first and third floors. A similar building was constructed for the State Savings Bank (PKO) at Gedimino Avenue 12, but it was demolished in the 1980s to make way for an archive annex.

This modest example of pure Modernist style, subtly integrated into the street’s facade, often goes unnoticed by passersby. Today, the former garage pit has been transformed into a modern jewelry workshop.
