Antakalnio g. 29, Antakalnis
A “Dual” school built with funds from the Vilnius city municipality in 1929-1930, when Vilnius was part of Poland. Designed by Stefan Narembski, a Polish architect, restorer, artist, and professor who also served as the chief architect of Vilnius at the time. Narembski was particularly drawn to the styles of the past, especially Vilnius Baroque.
Architects of that time were known for their freedom in interpreting historical styles, often simplifying and suppressing them to achieve natural and recognizable form, as an opposition to the pompous styles of earlier periods, a search for originality.
The Vilnius Antakalnis Gymnasium is a building that embodies the characteristics of Polish traditionalism, blending a retrospective exterior with a functional interior. The building’s uniqueness is highlighted by portals and other details inspired by Vilnius Baroque. However, the complex history of the city is reflected in the changing languages of instruction within the school walls. The newer extension, which somewhat overshadows the old building, offers a contrasting, modern feel with hints of postmodernism, creating unexpected spaces.
The school continues to carry a special history, where prominent individuals of today grew up, studied and shaped their lives within its walls: politicians, musicians, directors, etc.
