As the first Vilnius television station on Konarskio Street became both morally and technologically outdated, city architects faced a tough task: to design a television tower.
They sought a new focal point for the city, a symbol – a structure that would not mar the city’s landscape and architecture. High demands were placed on the architectural form of the tower, as it was to become the dominant building in the new residential areas of the city.
The project was a success, becoming a symbol of technological progress and construction innovations of the 1980s.
Due to the lack of advanced equipment during construction, professionals from different countries were invited, and the architect had to find ways to instill an architectural expression in the building, while being severely limited by structural and engineering solutions. The laconic form evoked, and continues to evoke, associations with space, which was the axis of technological breakthroughs during the Cold War. When constructing the upper part of the tower, a complex reinforced concrete structure was designed and later lifted to a height of 165 meters using cranes.
This structure, which reaches the highest into the Lithuanian sky, not only marks a significant step forward in television and radio retransmission but, following the tragic events of January 13, 1991, remains a symbol of the fight for independence.
