Over centuries, the “Tower Square” complex has evolved from several estates whose brick buildings were mentioned in historical sources as early as the 15th and 16th centuries.
Although the complex has been changing over the ages, its structure adapted to the natural terrain, harmoniously blending with the central and lower parts of the Old Town, located near the Vilnia River. In recent decades, this neglected complex of the oldest city hospital in Vilnius, which had operated for centuries, has been converted and brought back to life.
During the design work, special attention was paid to cultural heritage. Based on surviving drawings and sketches, some of the exterior and interior decor elements of the buildings were restored, important details of the buildings were uncovered, and the rooflines were complemented with Baroque turrets. The complex courtyard is adorned by a nearly 300-year-old linden tree from the Old Town.
The prepared management and adaptation concept provided the opportunity for maximum preservation of the valuable properties of the buildings and create a working modern and functional object. The complex became multifunctional.
The “Tower Square” can be called a sensitive and sustainable example of reconstruction. Functionality intertwines with clear aesthetics and luxury, however, exceptional importance is given to history and cultural heritage, while contemporary solutions highlight the historical character of the buildings.
