The Palace of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania is an early example of modernizing interwar architecture in Vilnius.
Located on Gediminas Avenue, near Lukiškės Square, this modest yet elegant and representative building features an original layout and volumetric composition. The building is asymmetrical, with one wing set back from the street’s building line. The main axis of the palace’s plan is a wide corridor that ends in a staircase with semicircular landings. A 140 square meter hall was designed on the second floor.
The main accent of the building is the loggia located on the Gediminas Avenue facade, open on both sides and covered by a portal with arcades. Above it, rising over two floors, are evenly spaced windows. In 1980, during the restoration of the palace, a three-story extension was added to the eastern part.
Since the building was constructed, various institutions were housed in these premises. In 1932, the building was built as the Chamber of Commerce and Crafts. From 1941 to 1944, the premises were occupied by the German Wehrmacht headquarters. Until 1990, the Vilnius City Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania was located in the building. From 1991 to 1993, the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania and the Vilnius City Privatization Service operated here. And since 1993, the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania is located here.
