Juozapas Montvila Colony in Lukiškės

Both visitors and longtime residents drawn their attention to this gem of modern style hidden in the heart of the city. This is one of the most unique architectural landmarks of the early 20th century – the Juozapas Montvila colony in Lukiškės, sometimes referred to as the first microdistrict of Vilnius.

The concept of building terraced houses, or “colonies” as they were known, was an idea ahead of time and unprecedented phenomenon in Lithuania which was encouraged by the prominent public figure, philanthropist, and director of the Land Bank, J. Montvila.

Constructed between 1911 and 1913, the perimeter block divided into three sections, consists of 22 buildings. With this project, Montvila aimed to further his vision of reforming residential environments. Integrally designing and building a community of terraced houses with a central garden – a sanctuary from the chaos of the world – he sought to promote economical construction methods without compromising comfort or aesthetics.

Having miraculously surviving two world wars, remaining untouched by obscurity and accumulating a noble memory of history, this remarkable structure continues to be one of the most fascinating examples of early 20th-century residential housing innovation.
