Radio House
About
The Radio House, one of the examples of socialist realism architecture in Vilnius, is located in the very centre of Vilnius, on A. Smetonos Street, which is a bit removed from the hustle and bustle of Gediminas Avenue. It is here that four radio stations have found a new home and open their doors to those curious to see how radio works up close.
The building has changed its purpose and identity several times in its 70 years of existence. First, it served the Ministry of Building Materials Industry, followed by a bank, then offices and a dance school.
Thanks to the architectural studio Plazma, the building is now fully renovated to accommodate the M-1 Group’s radio stations, but during the design process, the architects also tried to preserve the building’s historic interior elements and to “revive” the building’s authentic mid-20th century façade. The architects’ main task in bringing the building to life was to enable an innovative engineering institution in a historic setting. The interior is special not only for its aesthetically pleasing spaces, but also for its exceptional acoustic interior elements, specially designed for sound recording studios.
By preserving historical accents, Radio House invites everyone to discover a subtle dialogue between the ideals of the past and the innovative minimalism of today.
