LITHUANIAN NATIONAL OPERA AND BALLET THEATRE

Authors

ARCHITEKTĖ – E. N. Bučiūtė, 1974 m.

About

Elena Nijolė Bučiūtė (born in 1930) won the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre (LNOBT) design competition in the 1960s when she was very young, non-party and also a woman, which was completely unusual for the Soviet era;
When designing the theater, the architect foresaw that this building would have to reflect the direction of future architecture, the stylistic expression of which has not yet been finally formed;
Due to the glass facades, during a performance, when the yellow glass chandeliers are illuminated, the whole building is illuminated by a warm yellow light, visible from a distance outside;
Five different types of red interior bricks in the Dvarčionys building materials plant were specially made for this building;
Over time, the LNOBT became an integral part of the Old Town and a distinctive sign of the city with a special significance in the eyes of Vilnius residents.
