About

The magnificent gate of the Basilian monastery complex greets everyone walking up Aušros Vartų Street. The impressive late-Baroque gate takes you into the Basilian monastery complex, which was reconstructed after a huge fire in 1761, according to the design of the architect Johann Christoph Glaubitz. The wooden Holy Trinity Church and Monastery that stood here in the 14th century were replaced by masonry buildings that the Order of Saint Basil the Great later moved into.

Throughout its history, the Basilian monastery changed its purpose several times. At one time it was a prison where the poet Adomas Mickevičius (Adam Mickiewicz) and participants in the November Uprising were imprisoned. It later housed a Lithuanian spiritual seminary, followed by the VGTU Department of Electronics for more than 40 years. The ISM University of Management and Economics has been operating here since 2007, and in 2014, the ISM Innobase opened its doors in the stable/coach house building (Arklių Street).

The entire architectural ensemble is diverse, encompassing objects from different periods of time. You can even see a fragment of the old Vilnius city wall.
