17. Administration Building of the Lithuanian Railways

Authors

ARCHITECTS – T. Rostvorovskis, K. Korojedovas, 1903.

About

This huge neoclassical building arose in a new neighbourhood on one of the highest hills near the old town in the early 20th C. The seven-storey building instantly became a unique urban feature, contributing to the view of Pohulianka (currently Basanavičiaus) Street, as well as becoming an undoubtedly strong landmark in the old town’s landscape. Opinions on the object still differ, mainly due to its impressive volume; however, there is no doubt that this building is a great example of the spirit of historicism, which is so prevalent in the Naujamiestis (New Town) area. Finally, although every Vilnius citizen is very familiar with its exterior, this building also has much to offer from the inside, not to mention the breath-taking panoramas of the old town that are opening up from new and unusual perspectives. Visit this site to find out the most interesting secrets of the first skyscraper in Vilnius and its surroundings.
